It's amazing to me when I think of the changes owning a dog has brought to the lives of my wife and I. We moved to Graham in 2003, bought a nice small house in a nice quiet neighborhood and we loved it. My wife loved doing gardening and we both loved the peace and quiet of the town. After living here for a year we had talked with a few of our neighbors, but didn't really know anyone. Our home was like a little island that we retreated to at the end of everyday, but then all of that changed on fateful spring day.
As usual on Saturday Margaret was out working in the garden and I was out on a bike ride. While she was working this little dog came up and lay down near her. While she weeded he slept. They spent an hour together and like that my wife fell madly in love. Turns out, the little dog was a stray in the neighborhood. Before we knew it we were talking with our neighbors and figuring out what to do about him. Eventually he joined our home and every day as we walked the neighborhood people would say, "Hey isn't that the little stray. He looks great and happy." Our little island home had gone away and suddenly we were a part of our community.
We have Puppy Dog to thank for that. He helped us make friends and fall in love with our town.
A year after getting Puppy Dog, Margaret was reading a book by John Katz, The New Work of Dogs. He talks a lot in the book about people who are organized to do work for dogs, as well as the amount of love dogs bring to peoples' lives. This inspired Margaret to get the idea of building a dog park in Graham. This was 2005 and at the time the nearest public dog parks were in Chapel Hill or Greensboro. She spoke with the Graham Recreation and Parks Director who also felt it was a good idea and suggested she propose it to the Commission.
Perhaps the greatest lesson Puppy Dog has brought us, is the lesson that anyone can make a difference in their community. Through Puppy Dog we made new friends and found a voice for things we believe in. He has helped us to realize that anything is possible.
Now the dog park has been approved by the City and we turn to the community to help us complete the work that was started those years ago. Help spread the word and give a little to help us reach our monetary goal and build the best dog park around.
